SunShine: Congratulations on your 9 month froaverssary! That’s what I like to call it! How has this journey enhanced your life?

KC: It was unexpected. I didn’t plan that this would be so impactful. Unexpected, pleased, an unexpected journey. A deepening of who I wanted to be and I didn’t think it was going to be that.

SunShine: How did you make the decision to go natural?

KC: It (braids) were really expensive and became a ritual that seemed overwhelming. I had to make sure I ordered lunch each time for my stylist and I. God forbid I ran out of blonde! It was a stupid ritual and I looked the same for so long. It was a lot of money. However, I do miss the young lady who braided my hair. Change is good although I don’t really like it. I prefer consistency. I had to really force myself into it really. The conversation started maybe four years prior. I didn’t want to do a weave. I didn’t want my edges out or bangs to cover up everything, or a pony tail to snatch back. I didn’t want to do that anymore. I thought about wearing locks (locs) and found Sisterlocks who I spent two years investigating. Vanessa Williams, my co host on My Black is Beautiful, was the one who said to me, “Before you go into locs just rock your own hair. Don’t go from a look that requires maintenance by someone else to another look that requires maintenance by someone else”. So, instead I decided to take her advice and it sent me off in a whole other trajectory of other hairstyles of that ilk. So, that was fantastic advice and was glad I followed it. It was the best thing I’ve ever done.

SunShine: Are you still a product junkie? Which oils does your hair love?

KC: Yes! My hair loves Olive oil and Castor oil (use in kimmaytube leave in). I pre-poo with Olive oil 10 minutes to overnight and my hair goes “thank you, that’s nice!”

SunShine: Have you tried Grapeseed oil? It seals my ends nicely.

KC: No I haven’t…I spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos and what girls use on their hair. I try to watch girls who have similar hair like mine and try those products. At first I jumped in full force and quickly too. I learned that what may work for one person may not work for me. My hair seals well when I twist it though.

SunShine: I see that you are constantly on the go. You were shooting behind the scenes footage earlier today. Do you have a hair regimen at night?

KC: I use to double strand twist, looking for fantastic hair. I also tried the Satin pillow case, that didn’t work lol. In a nutshell, I take my shower, wash my face, and use a satin bonnet without fail. My next goal is to figure out how to set my hair at night and still look fabulous for my future man.

SunShine: Who is the beauty that is Kim Coles?

KC: My favorite color is purple. I am really happy to be me, I really like being KIM COLES, and I really enjoy being me even with the ups and downs and the blah blah blah. I am really clear and glad that I came here this time and I was me.

SunShine’s Reflection:

First, let me tell you all that Kim Coles has been an inspiration to me for many years and it was an honor for her to share her story with me. Who would have thought that a girl from St. Louis, Missouri would be interviewing the person she has looked up to for many years about her hair?

The thought that Kim Coles would EVER come out of her braids is even more appealing and impactful. Kim has given many naturals hope in knowing that change isn’t all that bad, especially if you are spreading love and light to other people. The ever evolving world of natural hair has turned into a sense of doubt for some. Through the use of her YouTube channel, Kim has invited us on her journey. The spirit she exudes puts any new natural or beauty thinking about becoming natural at ease. Kim continues to help people discover their G.I.F.T.S and she is truly a blessing to others. Please visit the links below for more information on this venture. Thank you so very much KC for sharing your story with the SunShine’s Natural & Loving It! community today! You are appreciated in more ways than one.

I had the pleasure of meeting KC at the Super Natural event in New Jersey this summer. I was the guest of Kinky Curly Coily Me! Having both people who inspired me to embrace this journey in one place was very overwhelming for me. Check out the pictures below!

The crowd surrounds her and I think “I’m just going to wait!” She looks up and we meet eye to eye. She says, “She looks familiar” and keeps talking to another curly. She looks back at me and realize that it’s me her sister SunShine!

KC is confirming what I just said in the first picture! She did recognize me!

I just love her!

I finally get to tell KC and Jenell of Kinky Curly Coily Me how much they both influenced my journey and how much they mean to me!

I love these curls!

So, I invited them both to St. Louis, Missouri and the best is yet to come!

Did you curls know that KC has a new show on Oprah’s network OWN?

I’ll see you guys on the next chat! xoxo
